Pacific Symphony Will Bring Untold Histories to Life in ‘Canto de Anaheim’
By PETER LEFEVRE August 23, 2019, VOICE OF OC
"Canto de Anaheim" actors are in rehearsal. They will portray the Mexican-American heroes of Anaheim, past and present.
Picture
Taking place at Anaheim’s Pearson Park, “Canto de Anaheim” is a multi-disciplinary look at the city’s past told through the stories of its unsung heroes, of several immigrants from Anaheim’s past and present who have had a substantial impact on their community...
Guerrero, who is taking on the gargantuan task of pulling it all together, is putting on her playwriting hat after a long hiatus.
“There’s a line in the play that Gustavo wrote,’ says Guerrero. “’This is not a perfect history, and by no means can we encapsulate everything. Some of the things, but not all of the things.’ My responsibility is to not make it feel like a history pamphlet, to make it actionable. And I hope this inspires future opportunities.”

CANTO DE ANAHEIM PRESENTS A MORE TRUTHFUL LOOK AT A CITY’S HISTORY
JOEL BEERS, OCTOBER 3, 2019, OC WEEKLY
Gustavo Arellano’s Weekly, Canto LXXVIII: Get Off the Book
The result blends oral and journalistic history, original dialogue, a fourth wall-breaking narrator, mariachi, and original (even a dash of punk) and classical music that doesn’t underscore so much as stop the narrative flow as each piece is introduced in its historical context. But all of it reinforces a narrative throughline of people standing together to get shit done; although marginalized and maligned for much of Anaheim’s history, the contributions of Mexican Americans make Mouse Town far more Brown Town. It’s a decidedly more truthful, historically based Our Town. FULL ARTICLE , CLICK HERE
It’s a great play, and the epitome of a collaboration: I did nearly all the research, Sara Guerrero of Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble wrote the play, and Long Beach Community Band head Greg Flores was guest conductor.
Sara Guerrero, a personal friend from years back, is turning into Orange County’s August Wilson — so support Breath of Fire with a donation for not going to see Canto de Anaheimalready!

Dive into the world of fantasy role-playing games! She Kills Monsters tells the story of “Average” Agnes Evans as she slowly packs her childhood home in Ohio while finally facing the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge and realizes how little she knew of her sister. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, ass-kicking lesbians, sexy, and nasty monsters, homophobe bullies, and 90's pop culture. Acclaimed playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geeks and warriors within us all.

GUADALUPE IN THE GUEST ROOM
by Tony Meneses

directed by Sara Guerrero
Presented by Creede Repertory Theatre
Denver, CO.

Guadalupe has lost a daughter, Steve has lost a wife, and neither of them can find enough common ground to talk about it. Coupled with the fact that neither of them can speak the other’s language, they find a new way to connect: through an unlikely love of Telenovela–the wildly popular Latin American soap opera. How can such different people come together and take a step toward healing? Guadalupe offers a profound look into the complexities of language, grief, loneliness, love, laughter, and new beginnings.

2018 marks the 20th Anniversary of the John Lion New Plays Festival!
Since 1997, CSULA’s former Theatre Arts & Dance Department (Theatre & Dance) has premiered 70 new plays written by our undergraduate and graduate students in The John Lion New Plays Festival. Past highlights include recognition by the prestigious Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival. Each play has been developed through tutorials, workshop readings, and production. Our playwrights have collaborated with guest directors, designers, faculty, actors, and student dramaturgs throughout the process.
As a special addition to the festival, we have commissioned Sigrid Gilmer, Cal State LA Theatre Arts and Dance alum, playwright, and writer on the Netflix adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events, to work with students to create a new piece that will premier in the festival along with the original student plays.  Ms. Gilmer was one of the student playwrights whose work was chosen for the very first New Plays Festival and she will share her experience and talent with a chosen group of students.  This fall 2017, the course TA 4890 Advanced Creative Workshop, was used as the incubator to develop and devise this new work.

Friday April 20 performance is an alumni invitation only event.  If you are an alum of the TAD program or the New Plays Festival, please send us an email at [email protected] for more information!!!

POIGNANT and POWERFUL - SmashMags.Com review

The Madres is not just a solid and moving reminder of Argentina in the ’70s. It puts a human face on political tragedies without being preachy, which isn’t always an easy balance. And it’s particularly timely with the oppression happening in this country these days. It should inspire us all to put on a white headscarf and march in front of the capitol under our own oppressive political regime. "

Over a two-year period (2012-14), South Coast Repertory—in partnership with Latino Health Access and supported by a grant from The James Irvine Foundation—listened to the stories of more than 1,000 residents of Santa Ana, Calif., to hear their personal recollections, hopes for and dreams about their community. The project —called Dialogue/Dialogos—saw the resident stories brought into the heart of a new play written by Jose Cruz Gonzalez, The Long Road Today/El Largo Camino de Hoy. The project and production was led by Artistic Producing Associate & Engagement Director Sara Guerrero. A handful of professional actors was joined by nearly 100 community members who acted, served as crew and volunteered in other capacities for seven performances in September 2014 in Santa Ana’s Civic Center Plaza. This video, produced by Gallo Studios for South Coast Repertory, is a retrospective of two-year project. www.scr.org.
