CANTO DE ANAHEIM PRESENTS A MORE TRUTHFUL LOOK AT A CITY’S HISTORY
JOEL BEERS, OCTOBER 3, 2019, OC WEEKLY The result blends oral and journalistic history, original dialogue, a fourth wall-breaking narrator, mariachi, and original (even a dash of punk) and classical music that doesn’t underscore so much as stop the narrative flow as each piece is introduced in its historical context. But all of it reinforces a narrative throughline of people standing together to get shit done; although marginalized and maligned for much of Anaheim’s history, the contributions of Mexican Americans make Mouse Town far more Brown Town. It’s a decidedly more truthful, historically based Our Town. FULL ARTICLE , CLICK HERE |

Over a two-year period (2012-14), South Coast Repertory—in partnership with Latino Health Access and supported by a grant from The James Irvine Foundation—listened to the stories of more than 1,000 residents of Santa Ana, Calif., to hear their personal recollections, hopes for and dreams about their community. The project —called Dialogue/Dialogos—saw the resident stories brought into the heart of a new play written by Jose Cruz Gonzalez, The Long Road Today/El Largo Camino de Hoy. The project and production was led by Artistic Producing Associate & Engagement Director Sara Guerrero. A handful of professional actors was joined by nearly 100 community members who acted, served as crew and volunteered in other capacities for seven performances in September 2014 in Santa Ana’s Civic Center Plaza. This video, produced by Gallo Studios for South Coast Repertory, is a retrospective of two-year project. www.scr.org.
